Music
Music is one of the most popular and powerful forms of media that kids and teens consume: more than half of American teens say they would die without it, and nearly all consider it very important to their lives. Mrs. Peterson works with students to learn the importance of music and how they can apply music skills across the curriculum.
Art
Art Class will be filled with art projects created to explore the Elements of Art while using a variety of different mediums and dabble with pottery. We will explore various artists through Meet the Masters Program, art movements, and art styles. Expectations will be set high and everyone will get a chance to show off their own personal creativity.
Physical Education
Our physical education program strives to develop students' personal fitness and skill-related abilities. The program reinforces students' understanding and application of fitness concepts and motor skills through a variety of movement forms. The program also aims to develop students' personal and social responsibility, self-management skills, and ability to make informed choices. The overall goal of this program is to enhance students' disposition toward leading a physically active lifestyle.
We will also participate in the Mighty Milers Program. Science
Students will understand that matter can be classified as elements, compounds, or mixtures.
They will learn the differences between elements and compounds based on observations, description of physical properties, and chemical reactions. Elements are classified as metals, nonmetals, and metalloids based on their physical properties. Energy resources are available on a renewable, nonrenewable, or indefinite basis. Force, motion, and energy. Energy occurs in two types, potential and kinetic, and can take several forms. Thermal energy can be transferred by conduction, convection, or radiation. It can also be changed from one form to another. The focus of Earth and Space is on introducing Earth's processes. Students should develop an understanding of Earth as part of our solar system. We will learn about organisms, environments, and ecosystems. |
Reading & Literature--StoryTownMackay Elementary uses a basal reading program called StoryTown. We will read and think about; Personal Triumphs, Joining Forces, A Changing Planet, Unique Perspectives, Ancient Wisdom, and The Outer Limits .
StoryTown includes stories for opportunities to work on reading skills, grammar work, spelling, and vocabulary words. Each week, we will study a new story, incorporate 20-25 spelling words, and learn 7-10 vocabulary words. Most of the time, our lesson/vocabulary test and spelling test will take place on Thursday of each week. Social Studies--Ancient CivilizationsIn sixth grade, students are ready to deepen their understanding of the Earth and its peoples through the study of history, geography, politics, culture, and economic systems. We will begin our examination of the world by exploring the location, place, and spatial organization of the world’s major regions. We will be looking at world history from its beginnings. We will be given an opportunity to study a few ancient civilizations deeply. In that way, we can develop higher levels of critical thinking by considering why civilizations developed where and when they did and why they declined. We will analyze the interactions among the various cultures, emphasizing their enduring contributions and link the contemporary and ancient worlds.
Accelerated Reading
Three AR chapter books read and tested on are required each 9 week period. Students should get at least an 80% on their tests. Students are encouraged to read; it increases knowledge and understanding. If the book read is not an Accelerated Reader, students can create a book report—please come talk to me and I will assist you in your project. I request 30 minutes of silent reading each night. As for reading, as a class, we will be reading a variety of trade books in addition to our StoryTown Reader.
Trade books include but not limited to; Maniac Magee, The Golden Goblet, Dragonwings, The Giver, Last of the Really Great Whangdoodle, Summer of the Monkeys, The Hunger Games, Cathryn Called Birdy, and The Hatchet. |
